I don't see anything funny about a professional male boxer beating up a woman

James,

Regardless of your sense of humor that you emphasized at the end of the video.

This is a 'battle of opinions' by using words - and it does stir up a very good discussion among the community. Everyone are entitled to their opinion, as yours too.

Your presentation on the video, may appear to be funny to you or to some people. For me, it is not funny at all to see myself beaten up by a professional martial arts boxer who is male.

This is bit too far to depict violence against women, and making this humorous to the audience because of the controversy.

On my blogs about Matt Hamill, I wrote about my opinions with factual and historical information, and I write with respect to Matt Hamill. I don't write anything degrading or demeaning against Matt Hamill.

I'm sorry, your video presentation is not funny. It is not okay to allow any form of presentation that promote violence against women.

Yeah mishkazena,

Deafies dont take a joke easy these days. Take my ewebrow marker joke for example. Lotta people went Mt. St. Helens-like kaboom over it. How sad.

He's made a valid point. If he puts Amy and Matt in a boxing ring, the analogy is well explained out.

If you are involved in a domestic violence program as you claim, you would immediately condemn this promotion of violence against a woman, even in a cartoon.

Don't try to minimize it by claiming that Deaf people don't get humor.

As a domestic violence advocate, I am surprised at your response. Obviously you have no problem with a guy beating up a woman.

brenster- said...

Sorry, but your style of humor isn't anywhere as close as those mentioned in your blog banner. Heck, it's not even witty. Lack of creativity, in fact.

I pity that you find that beating a woman to be very humorous. This type of humor that you thought was funny actually promotes violence on women.

Can't we all FOR ONCE participate in more intelligent, respectful and meaningful discussions without resorting to demeaning mockery on individuals on the basis of their race, gender, sex orientation, etc.

James,

I guess the only point you prove by presenting us with this vlog is that you have no idea about the negative influence you are creating.

I do not approve of this vlog and I do not find it funny whatsoever!

If you think this is funny, may I suggest you go and visit a shelter for women and children who have suffered from domestic violence and abuse.

I did this and boy did I wake up!

It is one thing to pick sides in a debate but it's another thing to promote violence against women.

It is bad enough that Hollywood does this yet its far worse when we allow it in our own community.

I'm disappointed to say the least.

This is not about violence. Open your eyes and look from objectivity point of view. James' point is about Amy Vs Matt. Amy's negativity about Matt's choices. WHO CARES how Matt pick for his big role. Matt has every right to pick whoever he wants. You are just jealous!

Amy, you really need to open your eyes and OPEN your mind and don't be so negative on deaf people's choices and bring them down. People like you need to get their heads smaller and stop pointing at deaf people's bad choices. Life doesn't send right there. It's not the end of the world. There are far more important about bilinguism, education, deaf children's needs, etc than picking fight with a man who has succeeded more than I can say! I guess you do not have sense of humor. How sad.

I thought this vlog was funny. It's like SNL (Saturday night live) and Jay Leno. I know they have done WORSE skits than this vlog. Have you been watching night shows? *shake head*

OCDAC said...

MZ,

I too am a DV advocate through the EJF system and were allowed to look at things on the lighter side.

Its sad even you MZ cant take things lightly. But then you know the Babel tower has sprung up in the heart of the deaf community 3 weeks ago. Amy shot the arrow up last week and now, a lotta deafies are going different ways.

InsaneMisha said...

Well,
I don't find that any funny at all. Even though you claimed it's kinda like SNL skit but I fail to see that similar.
I don't like seeing anybody beating up on anybody especially a professional boxer beating up a woman. Sounds like you're promoting a domestic violence.

Misha

InsaneMisha said...

Richard,

You're not really DV advocate...a fake one, I believe so. You better not insult our (Me,Mishka and Amy) intelligences.

So just STFU!

Misha, I take it you are a little kid who has to stoop to the low level with a bad language. *shake head*

Obviously You haven't been watching SNL. Lol

I really am getting tired of the crab theory between Deaf cult vs Deaf who grew up oral and converted to deaf community. Whatever happened to Deafhood?

It's insane when I read more comments on other sites. I find it insulting.

DEAFHOOD! come on.... be mature and discuss than point fingers at James accusing him of promoting Domestic violence. Grow up.

I am not sure if you realize what kind of message you are sending to the blogosphere when demonstrating how a woman is being beaten down by a professional boxer.

Do you actually think Matt would be enlightened beating up a woman?

I lost my appetite and couldn't even think about eating some popcorn.

Commenters who find the same light as I do don't mean that we lack a sense of humor because this is not exactly the kind of humor that is acceptable to our standards. Yes, there is violence everywhere in TV whether it is real or fake but that doesn't mean we should accept this as one of the standards to take it as a joke.

Richard, shame on you for supporting this analogy! You calling yourself as an advocate for domestic violence is like you are being a wolf in a sheep's clothing.

InsaneMisha said...

I was telling Richard to STFU, not you, aaron.

As for SNL reference, I've grow up with SNL all my life, you damn fool. That is more different from what you think. You better think twice before you call me a little girl. I don't appreciate it very much.

Misha

Aaron Nicole said...

Misha, I am saying you have to stoop to low level to say bad words on this comment. It shows lack of maturity.

And don't call me a d fool. How immature. LOL

James: Your entry is some kind of promotion in encouraging men to beat up on women.

You embarrass me as a man. Shame on you, James.

The whole thing boils not down to "the idea"

Roehm, you were, are and will not be viewed as a DV advocate because of what you did to many others including myself.

Be gone, nobody will care if you disappear for good. Trust me.

InsaneMisha said...

Bah, I'm not going to stoop down to your lowest level, aaron. You're not worth to argue with.

All I'm concerned about RR being a "fake" domestic violence advocate, period. Nothing to do with you.

Time to move on...

Any parent who has winced at video games would think this analogy pretty tame. Some games display blood, murder and dismemberment, and have both male and female characters battling it out with each other.

Sadly these video games do promote violence and definitely do not award points for choices involving kindness, accommodation, problem solving, understanding or even intelligence.

In the past games have been criticized for portraying villains as black people, Arabs, or Orientals. It is logical to include women in that no-no category.

We are promoting ideas so suggesting that the controversy be reduced to brawling in a cartoon ring is not appreciated, let alone resolved by man-on-woman knockouts.

James Carr said...

WOW! I never thought of woman violence at all. You all look for something to made me look bad. Oh well.. It is only movie and know a lot of people tend to look for something negative about this movie. For my next movie "James Carr VS Amy cohen Efron. I am sure I will get more negative comment but you are more welcome to give me a comment so that way i can learn something about you.

OCDAC said...

Like I said. Since Amy shot the arrow into the clouds atop the Babel tower.

Everyone's seeing things differently and going in different ways over the Mat Hamill issue.

As you can see it evidenced by the comments by mishkazena, misha, barb digi, and even ridor that finally came out of his hibernation.

Basically Amy shot the arrow and the deaf world split.

brenster- said...

James Carr-

No, we did not "look for something to made you look bad." The message of "professional male boxer beating up a woman" is already there in your vlog.

Laughing about it actually promotes not only violence on women, but it also promotes any degrading comments toward vocal women.

I am especially disturbed by the fact that one of our female community members, Amy, was subjected in that.

Now, I am concerned by how this vlog could send a message: Every time a female blogger speaks up in disagreement, she is in danger of being attacked with derogatory sexist remarks. It is an act of oppression in an attempt to silent the vocal female v/bloggers. It is already happening with another female blogger right now.

This is not about crab theory at all! This has absolutely nothing to do with dividing the Deaf community. Silly defense. The vlog is made in such poor taste.

You never thought about violence on women. Where were you in current news? Activism against violence on women is all over! No excuse for the ignorance.

Aaron Nicole said...

Of course, when the first person throws women violence, everyone else agrees. Come on. This is ridiculous! Favorism!!!!!!!!!

Heya there :)

You had a very excellent start to the vlog, you did a perfect update/summary of the whole controversy which I'm catching up on :)

The video game.. hmm thats where it could have been GREATLY improved.. (you wanted comments/feedback to improve ;D )

You said the video would be funny.. sit back and eat popcorn..

But instead, Im watching *video game* boxers punch punch punch (no amazing video effects here)..

I start wondering about 5 mins now into the vlog.. whats supposed to be funny....

And who wins? Matt Hamill? Errgghh WHat?... man of course if it was gonna be funny.. it'd be Amy doing the slow-motion uppercut and knock out Matt Hamill.. that is funny, HELLO?!!

Just the slow motion ending with Amy knockin out Matt.. what, 5-10 seconds would have been perfect.. instead of wasting A LONG Time watcing Videogame boxers :P :P :P

ANyway thats how I would have done the "Humor" part using the Boxers..

If you wanted to vlog and entertain people, its really important to consider your audience and communicate your ideas in a way that you'll keep their attention

Cheers!
Roger

We are losing the point here. I want to thank Amy for alerting us about what's happening with the casting for Matt's movie. Not only Amy, Deaf Community even Gallaudet and NTID reacted in similar way. It's OK to react one way or another. This is a free country!

I see this as double standard. It's OK for hearing people to protest for whatever happens with the media/films? There are many incidents in the recent past where there was a group protesting vs TV/film production companies. It resulted with a "resolution" with either a public apology or an effort to a better relationship between two groups of people.

I don't think this is something for us to ridicule at. It's uneducable. This is a serious matter for us to discuss, think thoroughly throughout the process and create an action. It's healthy and intelligent way of living!

Adios my friend you can play videogames all you want but next time I see your name I will not click on it because it has no absolute value.

I understand the woman's point of view. I understand the bashing on the women. It wasn't James Carr's intention. His intention was to "humorize".

Obviously it is not well-received by the readers.

Jay Leno, every every night, bashes some famous people including women. People already knew that Jay was only joking.
It goes same for James who *thinks* that his video is funny!

Obviously, it wasn't good timing to fuel more flames on hot issue about Hamill.

Please RELAX and James learned it hard way.

I found this is not funny at all. bad comedy you got this time. You got my first STRIKE!

To James Carr:

This is the most unspeakably offensive vlog I have so far seen
on DeafRead.

To Richard Roehm (a.k.a. OCDAC and
Nesmuth):

I am deeply disturbed and annoyed by your responses here (as well as
on other blogsites).

Did you know that a person who does anything abusively either verbally or physically is an abuser or a violent man.

Hello Human Editors:

Where have you been?

Jean Boutcher,

Whether you like it or not I've earned myself a decent slice of the deaf blog/vlog world.

And deafies need to learn to start looking at the lighter side of things for a change.
